Definition

​-Topographic map is a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional land surface.

​Term Topography is derived from Greek word ,,Topos'' meaning a place and ,,Graphein'' meaning to write. Thus, Topography is a written or drawn description of a place.

​Topographic maps are showing physical and human features but the difference between a theme map and a topographic map is that Topographic maps are showing elevation in detail.

Characteristics of a Topographic map are:

​1. They show elevation using lines which join points of equal elevation above sea level.

​2. They are showing men made features such as roads, railroads, buildings and some theme features such as vegetation and boundaries of National parks.

​3. They are produces mostly by government agencies.
