​It's not to say one is better than the other necessarily, they just serve different purposes depending on your research. Many historians will consult multiple primary and secondary source documents when they are researching a topic.

-It is a real item from the time

​-It is usually created by someone with first hand experience of the account

​DISADVANTAGES

​-May be biased

​

​-May be missing information/perspective

​-May be damaged

-May contain more complete information

​-May have extensive data/information to back it up
