​Map

​A drawing of all or part of Earth's surface. Its basic purpose is to show where things are.

​Continent

• ​A large solid area of land. Earth has 7 continents

​Ocean

• ​

  A huge body of salt water. Earth has 5 oceans.

​Hemisphere

• ​Half of a sphere, or ball. People use the word to describe one half of Earth.

​Compass Rose

• ​A drawing showing different directions on a map, is usually found somewhere on the edge of a map.

​Cardinal Directions

• ​ The four main directions or points of the compass: north, east, south and west.

​Intermediate Directions

• ​Directions on the compass that are halfway between these cardinal points are called northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest.

​Equator

• ​An imaginary circle around Earth. It divides Earth into two equal parts: the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.

​Prime Meridian

• ​The imaginary line that divides Earth into two equal parts: the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere. 

Lines of Latitude​

• Run in an east-west direction across Earth. ​

​Lines of Longitude

• ​Run in a north-south direction around Earth.
