REMEMBER:

  • Fractions can be SIMILAR or DISSIMILAR

  • Only SIMILAR FRACTIONS can be compared by comparing its numerator.

  • We use the symbols < , > or = in comparing the fractions.

3

SIMILAR FRACTIONS

are fractions with the same denominator.

4

Here are some examples of SIMILAR FRACTIONS

  •    45 and 35\frac{4}{5}\ and\ \frac{3}{5}

  •    79and 39  \ \ \frac{7}{9}and\ \frac{3}{9}\ \

5

Multiple Choice

WHICH AMONG THESE FRACTIONS SIMILAR?

1

13and 14\frac{1}{3}and\ \ \frac{1}{4}

2

38and 28\frac{3}{8}and\ \frac{2}{8}

3

67 and 24\frac{6}{7}\ and\ \frac{2}{4}

6

Multiple Choice

WHICH AMONG THESE FRACTIONS SIMILAR?

1

 25and  89\frac{2}{5}and\ \ \frac{8}{9}

2

 37and 78\frac{3}{7}and\ \frac{7}{8}

67 and 27\frac{6}{7}\ and\ \frac{2}{7}

7

Multiple Choice

WHICH AMONG THESE FRACTIONS SIMILAR?

1

 12and  22\frac{1}{2}and\ \ \frac{2}{2}

2

 35and 28\frac{3}{5}and\ \frac{2}{8}

3

 610 and 27\frac{6}{10}\ and\ \frac{2}{7}

8

DISSIMILAR FRACTIONS

are fractions with denominators that are NOT THE SAME

9

EXAMPLES

  •  56and 12\frac{5}{6}and\ \frac{1}{2}

  •  912 and 211\frac{9}{12}\ and\ \frac{2}{11}

10

Multiple Choice

WHICH AMONG THESE FRACTIONS ARE DISSIMILAR

1

412 and 212\frac{4}{12}\ and\ \frac{2}{12}

2

17 and 67\frac{1}{7}\ and\ \frac{6}{7}

3

110 and 18\frac{1}{10}\ and\ \frac{1}{8}

11

Multiple Choice

WHICH AMONG THESE FRACTIONS ARE DISSIMILAR

1

18 and 38\frac{1}{8}\ and\ \frac{3}{8}

2

47 and 29\frac{4}{7}\ and\ \frac{2}{9}

3

16 and 26\frac{1}{6}\ and\ \frac{2}{6}

12

Multiple Choice

WHICH AMONG THESE FRACTIONS ARE DISSIMILAR

1

2

 47 and 27\frac{4}{7}\ and\ \frac{2}{7}

3

16 and 26\frac{1}{6}\ and\ \frac{2}{6}

13

COMPARING SIMILAR FRACTIONS

We compare SIMILAR FRACTIONS by comparing their numerator. The bigger numerator means that the fraction is bigger.

14

EXAMPLES

  •  45>15\frac{4}{5}>\frac{1}{5}

  • The given fractions are similar.

  • the numerators are 4 and 1

  • 4 > 1

  • that means   45is greater than15\frac{4}{5}is\ greater\ than\frac{1}{5}

15

EXAMPLES

  •  79<89\frac{7}{9}<\frac{8}{9}

  • The given fractions are similar.

  • the numerators are 7 and 8

  • 7 < 8

  • that means   79is less than 89\frac{7}{9}is\ less\ than\ \frac{8}{9}
