Plants Lesson 5
Photosynthesis
2
Photosynthesis
Like all living things, plants need food in order to survive. Unlike humans, a plant cannot go to the grocery store and shop for food when it is hungry.
This is not a problem because plants are able to make their own food.
3
Photosynthesis
The process that plants use to make food is called photosynthesis.
The word "photo" is the Greek word for "light." Plants rely on light from the sun to help them make food.
4
How Does Photosynthesis Work?
Photosynthesis occurs inside of plant leaves. Plants breathe in air just like we do. When humans breathe, we want to breathe in oxygen.
When plants breathe, they want to breathe in carbon dioxide, which is another gas found in the air.
5
Multiple Choice
What is the process called in which plants make their own food?
seeds
chloroplast
photosynthesis
6
Multiple Choice
Where does photosynthesis occur?
inside of plant leaves
inside of seeds
in the roots
7
How does Photosynthesis Work?
Plants use carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to make food inside of their leaves.
Leaves are mde up of many tiny cells. Inside of each cell you can find chloroplast. Chloroplast is what makes leaves green!
8
Chloroplast
Chloroplast mixes together carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water to make sugar and oxygen.
Plants use the sugar as food to keep them alive, and breathe the oxygen back out into the atmosphere.
9
Multiple Choice
What three things do plants use to make food inside of their leaves?
carbon dioxide, water, sunlight
carbon dioxide, juice, sunlight
oxygen, soda, sunlight
10
Multiple Choice
What makes the leaves of a plant green?
markers
oxygen
chloroplast
11
Multiple Choice
What does a plant make during the process of photosynthesis?
apple juice and pancakes
sugar and oxygen
salt and water vapor
12
Photosynthesis
So the important thing to remember is that plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make food inside of their leaves. During this process they make sugar and oxygen, which helps us!
