Present, Past, and Future Verb Tenses

A verb in the present tense shows action that is happening now.

The past tense shows action that has happened.

The future tense shows action that will happen.

What to look for...

  • The past tense of many verbs is formed by adding -ed to the present-tense form. These are called regular verbs.

  • The future tense is formed by placing will before the first-person, present-tense form of the verb.

  • My brother waited in line for movie tickets the other day. (Past Tense)

  • Tomorrow, my brother will wait in line for movie tickets. (Future Tense)
