Lesson 11: How can we reduce the negative impacts of human activity on climate?

There are many human sources of CO2. Planting a tree a day can reduce climate change. Trees take carbon out of the atmosphere. Trees’ use of carbon makes for healthy ecosystems. Trees take carbon dioxide out of the air as they grow, storing it as wood.

3

Lesson 12: Do trees change the atmosphere around us?

Trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen

4

Lesson 13: How does CO2 get into a tree and what does the tree do with it?

The carbon dioxide goes in through stoma and to the chloroplasts.  In the chloroplasts, the carbon dioxide, water and sunlight are converted into oxygen, glucose and ATP

5

Lesson 14: How does a tree get the water it needs for photosynthesis?

Roots and fungi work together to help the tree absorb water through osmosis

6

Lesson 15: How does a tree move substances like water and glucose around?

Xylem move water, phloem move glucose throughout a tree

7

Lesson 16: Do other parts of the plant need glucose? How does a plant use it?

Trees are made of carbohydrates which are all built from glucose

8

Lesson 17: How does glucose turn into cellulose and starch and why?

Glucose is used to make cellulose which is used to make new cells.  This is how trees grow.

9

Lesson 18: Where does a tree get the materials besides carbon to grow?

P, N and K come from the soil and are important in making different parts of plants

10

Lesson 19: Where does a tree get the energy for growth?

Cellular respiration is the process living things go through to turn glucose into useable energy
