How Do I Identify a Genre?

Fiction

  • Purpose: Shares a message about life and the world (story telling)

  • Characteristics: Main character experiences a conflict that drives the events of the plot. In the resolution the main character changes in some way either good or bad. (Setting, theme, plot)

  • Supporting Ideas: Provides lots of description and details about the characters’ actions, feelings, and thoughts. 

    Provides lots of description and detail about the setting

  • Organization: There is a central conflict in the text that is intensified by the actions of the characters and setting.

Poetry

  • Purpose: EVOKES EMOTIONS in the reader through the use of figurative language

  • Characteristics: Lots figurative language variety of structures unconventional use of punctuation, capitalization

  • Supporting Ideas: Provides a lot of implied meaning. The reader will have to infer meaning from the details provided.

  • Organization of ideas:

Literary Narrative

  • Purpose: shares personal experiences of the narrator with details of the experiences' significance to convey how the narrator changed, grew, or came to a realization

  • Characteristics: The narrator experiences a personal change, realization, or growth

  • Supporting ideas: Provides personal experiences use of verb tense to indicate movement of time.

    Use of dialogue to show the importance of events conclusion showed realization of decisions made

  • Organization: chronological order to show how events occurred

  • Provides interaction with characters through dialogue. Audience must pay attention to the interactions to understand the plot and to infer meaning not explicitly stated in the drama.

  • Organization: Acts and scenes organized to move the plot
