A good reader knows that it is important to know whether the author is stating a fact or an opinion because it may influence their thinking.

  • A fact is a statement that can be proven TRUE or FALSE.

  • Facts give specific information.

  • Facts often contain numbers, dates, and ages.

  • Facts can be proven through observations, experiences, or research.

  • Keywords: dates, science, historical events, nonfiction, statistics, and numbers.

  • Example: Plants need water, sunshine, and nutrients to grow.

TIPS FOR DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN FACT AND OPINION

  • Ask yourself, “Can this statement be proven?” If so, it is a fact. 

  • Look for FACT clue words like research, proven, authentic.

  • Ask yourself, “Does this detail tell what someone thinks, feels, or believes about something?” If so, it is an opinion. 

  • Look for OPINION clue words like: believe, feel, think, most, best, should, worst.
