Anti-Semitism

Hatred of Jews

3

Jews were blamed for all of Germany's problems.

  • Hitler and the Nazis said they were inferior (less important or valuable than other people).

  • Hitler and the Nazis claimed that Germans were superior (better than) to Jews.

4

Hitler and the Nazis forced Jews to sew yellow stars onto their clothes.

  • They were worn by men, women, and children.

  • This helped the Nazis identify which citizens were Jewish.

People went along with the changes.

So the mistreatment of the Jews continued.

The Nazis told Jews that they could no longer have jobs working for the government. They declared Jews were not citizens of Germany, and they took away their rights. Germans were told not to buy things from Jewish businesses.

7

The night of November 9, 1938 showed how terrible living in Germany had become for the Jews.

It became known as Kristallnacht, which is German for "Night of Broken Glass".

The Nazis also captured thousands of Jewish men that night.

They took away their property and sent them to concentration camps.

10

Upon seeing this violence, many Jews tried to flee Germany.

Some Jews left, but many stayed. They did not believe the Nazis would say in power very long. Not long after, more Jews tried to leave, but most other countries would not accept them by that time.
