Base Words

  • A base word is a word without any endings added to it.

Short Vowel Sounds

  • If a base word has a short vowel sound and ends in a consonant, double the consonant before adding -ed or -ing

  • rub - rubbed - rubbing

Ending with e

  • If a base word ends with an e, drop the e before adding -ed or -ing.

  • taste - tasted - tasting

Ending with y

  • If a base word ends with y, change the y to i before adding -ed.

  • Do not change y to i before adding -ing.

  • cry - cried - crying
