Angle Sum of a Triangle

  • The sum of the measures of the interior angles of a triangle is 180o.

  • <1 + <2 + <3 = 180

3

Find the missing angle.

In Δ MAY , if m<M = 72o and the m<Y = 74o

Give this a try! The work and answer are on the next slide.

4

So what is angle A?

  • Remember the sum of all three angles is 180.

  • m<A = 180 - (72 + 74)

  • m<A = 180 - 146

  • m<A = 34o

5

Here is another example. The measures of the angles of a ΔABC are in the ratio 1:4:5. What are the measures of the angles?

  • Let x = angle A

  • Then ......4x = angle B and 5x = angle C

  • Now we can make a equation! x + 4x + 5x = 180

  • 10x = 180

  • x = 18

6

If x = we now can find all the angles!

  • m<A = x = 18

  • m<B = 4x = 4(18) = 72

  • m<C = 5x = 5(18) = 90

  • The measures of the angles are 18o, 72o, and 90o

Finding x

Remember the sum of the remote interior angles equals the exterior angle.

So........

63 + 86 = x

149 o = x

10

Finding x when it is a interior angle!

  • The sum of the remote interior angles equals the exterior angle.

  • x + 40 = 100

  • -40 from both sides

  • x = 60o
