Some Background on Martin Luther King Jr.

  • "Martin Luther King Jr. was an African American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968."

  • Had a doctorates degree in Theology.

  • In 1955 helped organize the first major protest of the African American civil rights movement: the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott.

So, why did Martin Luther King Jr. write the "Open Letter from Birmingham Jail"?

-8 clergymen wrote a letter complaining about King and the movement of non-violent protests.

-They felt that people should "use the courts if rights were being denied".

- MLK's letter was written in response.

- He wrote it in jail after being arrested for non-violent protest.

- He wrote to persuade clergymen that protest was the only answer.
