5

What was the American Revolution?

The American Revolution was a point in time when people living in the "new world" (North American) broke away from Great Britain and wanted to rule themselves. They did not want the king to be the ruler of them anymore, so they fought a war to get away.

6

What's going on

  • By the mid 18th Century the country of England has become Great Britain. They now had 13 colonies in the New World that covered much of the east coast of North America.

*** Remember - Jamestown, established in 1607, was the first permanent English colony in North America. By 1763, there were 13 English colonies in the New World.

Over time the Colonist and Parliament began to disagree more and

more over how the colonies should be governed. These

disagreements eventually lead to the American Revolution also

known as the Revolutionary War.

12

Causes that led to the war:

The French and Indian War caused two main problems between the Colonies and Great Britain.

#1 - Land

England decide to reserve a lot of the land they'd won for the Indians. they told colonists that they could not settle in this land.

This made the colonists MAD. They had fought for the land and didn't think it was fair for England to tell them they couldn't live there.

13

Causes that led to the war:

#2 - Taxes

The war lasted a long time and cost a lot of money. The British government decided to raise taxes (a fee on goods and services that goes directly to the government) on the colonists to help pay off their war debt.

This made the colonists MAD. They were not allowed to have representatives in the British government, called the Parliament. They couldn't vote AGAINST having their taxes raised.

A LOT of colonists were now talking about how UNFAIR the British government was being to the colonists.
