What is a Key Signature?

  • Tells which notes to play sharp or flat for the entire piece of music

  • Always located after the clef and before the time signature at the beginning of the piece of music.

  • Generally uses two of the three accidental signs. (Sharp and Flat)

How to identify the sharp key signatures

  • Locate the LAST sharp.

  • Move up one(1) letter

  • For example, last sharp: G , move up one(1) letter to A

How to identify the flat key signature

  • Locate the penultimate flat. (second to last)

  • That flat is your key signature.

  • For example, "The flat signs shown are B flat and E flat." Bb is the penultimate flat sign in this scenario.

  • The answer would be the key of Bb.
