  • This purchase doubled the size of the U.S.

  • Adams had appointed Marbury a judge in his last days in office

  •  William Marbury, was a Federalist Party leader from Maryland

  • He grew angry that he did not receive his commissions before Jefferson took office.

  • Once Jefferson took office, he told James Madison ( he was secretary of state) to hold onto the commissions

  • Marbury petitioned the Supreme Court, he wanted to be a judge badly
