Functions of Water

• Regulates body temperature

• Moistens tissues in the eyes, nose and mouth

• Protects body organs and tissues

• Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells

• Lubricates joints

• Lessens the burden on the kidneys and liver by flushing out waste

• Helps dissolve minerals and nutrients to increase availability

Structure

• H2O - hydrogen & oxygen

• Polar molecule - covalent bonds & bent shape

• Solvent properties

• Cohesive & adhesive properties

• Unique chemical properties at a solid, liquid and gas

Importance

• Some insects rely on the surface tension of water to stay afloat

• Allows water to move to the top of trees
