Vocabulary
These are words you will need throughout our next unit! There is a graphic organizer for you to use in our Schoology folder to keep track of them.
4
How it works:
We will take a poll of what we think the word attached to the definition means
Then we will look at the word and definition in depth
5
Poll
Word 1:
The idea that the universe exploded and rapidly expanded from a single point is called the
Solar System Theory
Big Bang Theory
Telescope Theory
Chicken Theory
6
The Big Bang Theory!
The universe exploded (big bang) and then started rapidly expanding (spreading out) and created the universe we know today
7
Poll
Word 2:
When light in distant objects shift in frequency
Blue Shift
Green Shift
Doppler Shift
Shirt Shift
8
Doppler Shift!
When light from distant objects in the universe shifts (moves) to the red end of the visible specturm, the object is moving away from us
9
Poll
Word 3:
The farther away a galaxy is from Earth, the faster it is moving
Newtons Law
Johns Law
Hubbles Law
Speed Law
10
Hubbles Law!
If a galaxy is farther away from us, then it is moving at a greater speed.
11
Poll
Word 4:
A very young star with a core that is not hot enough for fusion to yet take place
Old star
Young Star
Prestar
Protostar
12
Protostar!
"Proto" means young, therefor a protostar is a star that is young, and therefor is not very hot. Because of this, fusion can not take place so it does not expand as rapidly as older stars.
13
Poll
Word 5: A device that measures the spectrum of light
Flashlight
Spectrscope
Starlight
Microscope
14
Spectroscope!
Device used by scientists to see the light ( visible spectrum) an object emits
15
Poll
Word 6: A system of two stars orbiting one another
Two Star System
Rotation System
Binary Star System
Whirly System
16
Binary Star System!
When two stars orbit (rotate) around one another. Pefix "bi-" means two
17
Poll
Word 7:
A very large group of stars
galaxy
universe
solar system
star cluster
18

A group of stars that are very large in number and sometimes they get names (constellations)
19
How did you do?!?
Now go to Schoology, fill out the graphic organizer, and take the quiz to show me what you know!
