Nouns

  • Are either feminine, masculine, or neuter

  • 1st declension: mostly feminine, a few masculine nouns that are "job" type nouns

  • 2nd declension: masculine or neuter (neuter has a few different endings)

  • Are either singular or plural

  • Have a case based on how it's used in the sentence

Parts of the noun

  • When you see a noun in the vocab list, what does each thing mean?

  • ager, agrī, m.

  • The first word is the singular, nominative form (ager)

  • The second word is the singular, genitive form (agrī)

  • We get our noun stems from the singular, genitive. Just remove the genitive ending to get the stem. (agr-).

  • The gender of the noun is listed last (m = masculine)

Parts of the verb

  • cōgitō, cōgitāre, cōgitāvī, cōgitātum

  • These are the 4 Principal Parts

  • cōgitō - 1st person, singular, present, active

  • cōgitāre - active infinitive

  • We get verb stem from the active infinitive, by dropping the -re (cōgitā-)

  • cōgitāvī - 1st person, singular, perfect, active (a form of past tense)

  • cōgitātum - perfect, passive, participle
