Ch, Ch, Ch, Changes

  • The matter itself is still the same.

  • This type of change is called a physical change.

  • The key to a physical change is that nothing new is made.

Melting and Freezing

  • Remember that matter can exist in different states.

  • Solids, liquids and gases are the three most common states of matter. These states are also important to know when thinking about physical changes.

  • Moving from one state to another is an example of a physical change.

12

Melting and Freezing

  • The thing to keep in mind when looking at these changes of state is that NO NEW MATTER IS MADE.

  • The matter you started with is still there, just in a different form.

Freezing and Melting

  • Freezing and melting are two common physical changes.

  • When you freeze a liquid, the cold slows down the particles in it.

  • Remember that solids have very slow moving particles.

  • Freezing a liquid changes it into a solid.

15

Freezing and Melting

  • When you take a solid out of the freezer and warm it up, it is called melting.

  • When the temperature is warmer, the particles start to move faster.

  • This changes the solid into a liquid.
