Figurative Language

  • What is figurative language? When words mean something other than their literal meaning.

  • Simile: a comparison of two things using the words “like” or “as”

  • Metaphor: a comparison of two things without using “like” or “as”

  • Personification: when you use a non-living object and make it have human or animal-like qualities 

  • Hyperbole: exaggerated statements that are not meant to be taken literally

  • Onomatopoeia: words that are associated with a sound (sizzle, buzz, wham, pow)

Examples

  • My body felt like a tree. (simile)

  • My body felt as big as a tree. (simile)

  • My body is a tree, tall and strong. (metaphor- still a comparison but the words “like” or “as” are not used)

  • The wind howled loudly that night. (Can wind actually howl? What does howl?)

  • •Ms. Grande heard that last piece of pie calling her name. (Does the pie have a mouth?)
