2

Fill in the Blank

You can recognize an acid because the formula always

3

Multiple Select

Mark all of the acids in the list

1

HCl

2

NaOH

3

HNO3

4

hydrosulfuric acid

5

nitrogen trihydride

4

Categories of Acids

  • Acids may all start the same, but there are 2 types based on what they contain

  • Binary acids contain a single nonmetal anion

  • Oxyacids contain a polyatomic anion which has oxygen in the formula

  • How are they named differently?

5

Multiple Select

Mark all of the binary acids in the following list

1

HBr

2

NaBr

3

HBrO2

4

H2S

5

sulfuric acid

6

Naming Binary Acids

  • There are not many of these!

  • Most important thing is to start ONLY these acids with "hydro"

  • There is ONE WEIRD EXCEPTION! The polyatomic ion cyanide (CN1-) is named by binary rules because it doesn't have oxygen

  • HCN = cyanide --> cyanic so hydrocyanic acid

Multiple Choice

What is the correct name of HF?

1

fluoric acid

2

hydrofluoric acid

3

hydrofluorine

4

hydrogen monofluoride

8

Writing Formulas for Binary Acids

  • Ending in "acid" means you start with H in the formula

  • "hydro" means you only have 1 other nonmetal

  • Use the "root" in the name to identify the other nonmetal and it's charge

  • The charge tells you how many hydrogens you need in the formula (there will only ever be 1 of the other thing in the formula)

9

Multiple Choice

What is the correct formula for hydrophosphoric acid?

1

HP

2

H2P

3

H3P

4

HP2

5

HP3

10

Naming Oxyacids

  • You have to determine the polyatomic ion in the formula in order to name these. Everything is based off of that.

  • Literally write the name of the polyatomic ion.

  • If it ends in "ate", drop that and add "ic acid".

  • If it ends in "ite", drop that and add "ous acid".

Multiple Choice

What is the correct name of HClO3?

1

hydrochloric acid

2

chloric acid

3

chlorous acid

4

hydrogen chlorine trioxide

12

Writing Formulas for Oxyacids

  • Ending in "acid" means you start with H in the formula

  • NO "hydro" means you have a polyatomic

  • Use the "root" in the name and "ic" or "ous" to identify the polyatomic and it's charge

  • The charge tells you how many hydrogens you need in the formula (there will only ever be 1 of the other thing in the formula)

13

Multiple Choice

What is the correct formula for phosphoric acid?

1

H3P

2

HPO4

3

H3PO4

4

H3PO3

5

HPO42-

Poll

You clearly need to know your polyatomic ions and have the cheat handy for your homework. Mark all that apply for you.

I have printed out that cheatsheet from the notes last week!

I handwrote out the list of polyatomics from the jam board/notes video

I have made physical flashcards of the highlighted polyatomic ions

I have made/found a Quizlet set of the highlighted polyatomic ions

I have done none of these things
