Context

  • Flashback: last time we visited China was during the Yuan Dynasty, which was run by Mongols in late 1200s-1300s, but what happens after that?

  • The Yuan, like the mongols, collapsed pretty rapidly and new dynasties begin appearing in the region.

16

Ming Dynasty

  • Took over mid 1300s after the Yuan until mid 1600s

  • Get Rich or Die Trying Empire (opened up trade and exports in huge way)

  • one of most stable, but also one of most autocratic dynasties

  • Major emphasis on conservative values of Confucianism especially civil service examination

  • Builders of the majority of today's great wall (for obvious reasons)

  • Population skyrocketed in China
