The Māori People

The Māori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. They came here more than 1000 years ago from their mythical Polynesian homeland of Hawaiki. Today 1 in 7 New Zealanders identify as Māori.

The Māori People (continued)

The Haka is a traditional dance of the Māori people. It is a ceremonial dance or challenge. This dance usually consists of foot stomping and and rythmic body slapping to a loud chant.

When do the Māori people do the Haka?

  • Back in history the Haka was usually perfromed when 2 tribes met eachother.

  • Today it is perforemd at weddings, birthday parties,funerals, and at sporting events.

  • Every one in New Zealand participates in it even if you are not Māori

Milford Sound/ Piopiotahi

  • in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island

  • known for Mitre peak,  plus rainforests and waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen falls which flow down the sides of Mitre Peak

  • 13 kilometres long

  • Slowly melting due to climate change

  • Aoraki is the name of a person in the mythology of the Ngāi Tahu (South Island Māori) tribe.
