Transitive Verbs: A transitive verb is a verb that requires an object to receive the action. 

  • The instructor addressed the student’s question.

  • Can you bring your copy of the textbook to our study group meeting?

  • Donovan gave the gift to his sister.

  • Donovan gave his sister a laptop. This shows direct and indirect objects.

An intransitive verb does not take an object.

  • Ahmad voted in the local election.

  • May I sit here?

  • Attendance increased at the weekly study sessions as finals drew near.
