Language of Science and Technology
On each slide you will see a short description of a person and something that person did. Identify if they are doing science or technology, and find "supporting" words in the reading.

2
Galileo Galelei
Galileo worked very hard to discover why objects fell to the ground.
In his research, he learned that objects that have different weights (kg or pounds) fall at the same speed.
From his research he learned that all objects fall at a common speed (9.8 m/s2), which allowed Sir Isaac Newton to use his calculations to write his LAW OF UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION.

5
Galileo Galelei
Galileo wanted to do an experiment that required he be able to see the surface of the moon
There were no telescopes that could see the moon available.
Galileo found a very basic telescope made by a man in Holland, but it could not see the moon. Galileo wanted to know if he could make it better..?
After much research and develpment, Galileo learned to make powerful glass lenses that allowed his invention to see the moon.
Galileo is given credit for inventing the modern telescope.

Sir Isaac Newton
Isaac newton was a very smart scientist, but he was also something of an inventor.
While on break from college, due to the plague, Newton worked with existing Geometry mathematics, but found them useless for the work he was doing...
After much research and redesign, Newton invented Calculus in just one summer break...
Calculus is a form of mathematics, but is also a form of communication...

Thomas Edison and Nicola Tesla
Thomas Edison was an inventor who made a lot of things that are very useful, including the light bulb and DC electricity...
Edison hired a very smart Serbian man named Nicola Tesla, who experiement with electricity to answer questions about its speed of travel and how much power would be necessary to make a lightbulb work, and how hot the lightbulb would become if left go too long...
Due to his experiments, Thomas Edison was about to use his discoveries to make new electrical devices.

Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs was a computer scientist and engineer
He was seen as a man who was able to see how humans will interact with computers a long time before they were invented
Jobs worked very hard with other engineers to design and develop the first Apple / Mac computer in the late 1970's
As well as the Apple / Mac computer, his company went on to invent the ipod, iphone, imac and many, many other products that met his dream of every person interacting with computers.

Stephen Hawkings
Stephen Hawkings was a brilliant scientist and mathemetician
Hawkings was very interested in "black holes" but due to telescopes not being able to see very far, his work was very slow for 30 years.
When telescopes became more powerful and could see deeply into the universe, he was able to (1) discover and see black holes and (2) learn a lot about how they work.
Hawkings won a Nobel Prize for his research and theories
