What is a frame?

the act of creating a border around an object

• it doesn't have to look like a traditional frame around a picture

• the border creates a focal area or point inside that the viewers eye is drawn to

So basically.....

something in the photo frames an object in the photo......hence the term sub-frame

Structural framing

This is framing using structural things like books, tables, doors, fences, mirrors, ect...

The fence borders the house. The fence is structural. Your eye is drawn to the house.

The window frame is the structure and borders the person in the photo. Your eye is drawn to the person.

The mirror is the structure that frames the persons face. Your eye is drawn to the reflection first.

Environmental framing

Framing using Light or Shadow

The light frames the person which focuses the viewers eye to the person.

The light frames the dog.
