He was forced to escape down a city wall and traveled to Jerusalem, where he found a frightened and confused group of believers. Despite their fears, however, these believers took Saul in and supported him. Saul began to dispute with the Hellenistic Jews, who also eventually turned against him.

Answers may include the following: Old Testament proselytes came to God and then submitted to all the regulations, sacrifices, and mandates of Mosaic law. Because God spoke directly to Peter, he understood God’s change in plan and was equipped to relate it to others. Peter calmly and humbly recounted what had happened to Jewish Christians in Jerusalem and to Cornelius and his household in Caesarea. Peter explained that the requirements of the law had been put aside and that food was not the focus. Even the law taught that circumcision of the heart was the key to salvation. But more importantly, the Mosaic Covenant had been fulfilled by the New Covenant so that Jesus Christ provided cleansing for all people in Him. Believers must be internally identified by the Spirit’s work, which provides spiritual cleansing and a new life. These clarifications signaled that even Jewish Christians were no longer bound by the Mosaic law’s requirements (though they were still obligated to the moral law of God now written on their hearts). Whenever a new kind of people was added to the church in Acts, the Spirit demonstrated His presence in the new believers by enabling them to speak in tongues and praise God. Peter therefore concluded that the Spirit is a gift for all people. In contrast to believing Gentiles, who had received full and direct acceptance as children of God when they were baptized by the Spirit, many Jews weren’t converted, even though they outwardly kept the law. After listening to Peter defend the salvation of Gentiles, the Jewish Christians stopped their accusations, gave glory to God, and recognized that God had truly done a redeeming work in the Gentiles without requiring them to become Jews.

Answers may include the following: Despite the nefarious plans of those who martyred Stephen, the gospel began to spread from its epicenter in the Jerusalem church. Jesus prophesied that James would share His cup and baptism. James’s death fulfilled this prophecy and proved that God is the one who chooses when to bring His children home. Those who ordered James’s execution weren’t really in control. On the other hand, God had a very different plan for Peter. He was imprisoned but then miraculously freed by an angel who helped him escape. Thus the Lord would continue using Peter to advance the gospel. Herod’s most secure prison cell was not an obstacle for God and could not thwart His plan. Herod received his just reward when he died after being eaten by worms. God controls the lives of the unrighteous just as He does the righteous. God’s timing in each of these circumstances is perfect; all people, including influential and powerful rulers, are under His authority. God works through people, no matter how powerful or rebellious they may be, and uses a variety of means to accomplish His purposes. As a result of all these events, God’s Word grew and multiplied.

The apostles also taught that the New Covenant empowered believers to obey God through the Spirit within them. The Judaizers’ false teaching was Pharisaical, legalistic, and ultimately dangerous to the cause of Christ. Peter and Barnabas went with other believers to Jerusalem to clear up the confusion by testifying before the Jerusalem Council. Peter once again took on a familiar role and acted as a spokesman. After listening to some discussion among the elders and apostles, Peter correctly stated that salvation is the work of God alone. Peter pointed out that his own calling was to the Gentiles and that they had received the same Spirit as the Jews. Finally, Peter asked why the Judaizers were tempting God by holding these new Gentile believers to a requirement no Jew could ever meet. Peter verified his conclusion by citing Amos’s prophecy (over eight hundred years earlier) of Israel’s future salvation. When the Messianic King came, the Gentile nations would be called by God’s name without having to become Jews.
