It was important because the jewish army officer Alfred dreyfus who was charged with treason. His trial is what caused the outbreak of the Dreyfus affair. Aflred dreyfus was accused of spying for germany and he got a military trial and dreyfus was convicted of treason and the military had claimed they had written evidence from dreyfus but dreyfus nor his lawyer were allowed to see the evidence. The injustice was rooted in Anti-Seminism, and the military elite detested Dreyfus, the first ever jewish person to reach such a high position in the army.
