Deng Xiaoping turned China's economy into a 'Socialist Market Economy', mixing capitalism with communism. He focused on 'The Four Modernizations': industry, military, technology, and agriculture. He abolished communes, allowed farmers to own their farms, and opened China to foreign trade.

They began on April 17, 1989, after the death of Hu Yaobang. Pro-democracy students gathered in Tiananmen Square, and by April 21, the number of demonstrators had swelled to over 100,000. On May 20, Deng declared Martial Law and sent the army to disperse the crowd.
