Pulmonary circulation function

Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs and oxygenated blood back from the lungs to the heart.

Systemic circulation function

Carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body and deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart.

Types of blood vessels

There are three types of blood vessels: capillaries, arteries, and veins.

An artery carries blood away from the heart.

Blood pressure in arteries

Arteries carry high pressure blood.

Artery wall structure

Arteries have a thick outer wall and a thick inner layer of muscle and elastic fibers to withstand pressure.

Capillaries are the thinnest of all the blood vessels.

Their walls are only one cell thick.

Capillary walls are thin.

White Blood Cells and Infections

Someone with an infection will often have a higher WBC count than when they’re well since more WBCs are being produced to battle the infection.

After the body has been challenged by some infections, some WBCs "remember" how to make specific antibodies that will quickly attack the same germ if it enters the body again.

Platelets help to repair tissues and close wounds both internally and externally.

Platelets are crucial for tissue repair and wound closure, functioning both inside and outside the body.

When needed, platelets grow into irregular shapes and stick together to form a plug over the wound.

Platelets change shape and aggregate to form a protective plug over wounds.

The blood cells and platelets are suspended in a substance called plasma.

The four chambers of the heart have special names.
