The time, place and environment of a story or poem. Ask: Where? When? What? The setting affects what happens in the story.

Series of events in a story: Exposition, Initiating Event, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution.

Initiating Event

Back

Introduces the main conflict of the story. Can happen before the story begins, during the exposition, or usually during the rising action.

Introduction; Beginning. Introduces the reader to the setting and characters. Not very long; can be a paragraph or chapter(s).

The majority of the story takes place. Leads up to the major conflict. Creates suspense.

Most intense, exciting, or important part of a story. Turning point; everything leads up to a major fight, confrontation, or event.

Falling Action

Back

Occurs right after the climax. Everything is starting to be solved or conflict resolved. The end is near, tying up loose ends.

End of the story. May be a chapter, paragraph, or one line. All problems are solved or resolved. Can be a cliffhanger.
