Proprietary software is owned by one person or organization, and they have exclusive control over it.

Source code is the part of software that most users don't see; it's the code programmers can manipulate to change how software works.

Characteristics of open-source software

- Very little professional and technical support. - Reliable with community-created updates. - Little or no upfront costs. - Source code can be viewed, shared, and modified.

Characteristics of proprietary software

- Professional and technical support available. - Stable product with regular updates. - Can be costly to buy a license. - Source code cannot be modified.
