The civil service exams in ancient China were based on the teachings of Confucius. A candidate for entrance into the government (the civil service) had to demonstrate that he had read and memorized the tenets of Confucianism. A lot of schooling was necessary to master this knowledge. Mostly it was the sons of wealthy nobles that had a chance at a government career.
