FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

Understanding and Addressing Different Behaviours

Back

For example, when children have emotional outbursts, teachers must take the time to understand why it happens and then come up with strategies to address them in class. It is extremely tough when they spend a whole day dealing with a particular behaviour, especially when it disrupts lesson flow. On top of that, each student has different behaviours, and there are time where strategies that used to work, fail. This makes reaching learning goals a lot tougher.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

The Physicality of Caring

Back

There are students who may scratch and hit themselves or others. This is due to a variety of factors that the teacher needs to understand to prevent the students from getting physical in the first place. When they do, teachers are the ones who have to protect the child, the other students, and themselves. This can be scary to deal with. On top of that, other children are runners and leave the class, so teachers have to chase them.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

Administrative Workload

Back

Depending on the school, teachers may face high amounts of administrative work, which lengthens their working hours. Mel, for example, shared how she and her colleagues had left their previous job not because of the actual work, but because of the tedious amounts of admin work. Mag shared that sometimes teachers have to plan activities for special occasions as well, something beyond the regular teaching curriculum.

FLASHCARD QUESTION

Front

Interactions with Parents

Back

SpEd teachers often have to work with parents so that children can continue working on their skills at home. This means frequent parent teacher meetings and sometimes, home visits. On top of that, parents may want more regular updates of their children, such as on a weekly or even daily basis. Teachers listen to the worries and expectations of parents towards their children. This ramps up the pressure on teachers. Additionally, whilst most parents are willing to do the work at home, some parents may not cooperate, risking the child's regression in their skills.
