FLASHCARD QUESTION
Front
A person, creature, animal, or fantasy being that "changes" throughout a story. (In Because of Winn Dixie both the Dewberrys and Otis could be considered this. The Dewberry brothers are this because they are mean in the beginning of the book but they become nice to Opal later in the book. In addition, our perception of Otis changes because in the beginning we think he might be bad because he has been to jail but we later find out why he went to jail and that his is really a nice person).

Front
The beginning of a story in which the reader finds out about the characters, setting, and the beginning of the conflict. This is the background part of the story that helps the reader understand the story better. (In Because of Winn Dixie this part of the plot line would include finding out who Opal, the preacher, and Winn Dixie are. It also includes the setting (Naomi, Florida) and that Opal is being raised by her father because her mama left them when she was younger.

What is the part of the story called that begins to slow down and lead to the conclusion or ending? (In 'Because of Winn Dixie', after Opal realizes that Winn Dixie is safe at Gloria's house, the story slows down and prepares us for the conclusion or ending by having Opal talk to her mama kind of like she is praying and then the Dewberrys are nice to her).
